Is it 2007 or 1985? I admit I don’t “follow” college basketball anymore, which is why I fell into a time warp yesterday while watching the Pitt-Georgetown basketball game.
First, I heard the announcer mention Georgetown coach John Thompson. “Wait a minute … what the …?” I say to myself. Then I note that this is John Thompson III, son of the storied John Thompson Jr. JT Jr. led Georgetown to the NCAA championship game in 1984 (won it) and 1985 (lost it, to Villanova). In those days, I spent too much time watching college hoops.
A few minutes later Patrick Ewing enters the game. “WHAT THE …?” my brain screams. Oh, this is the SON of Patrick Ewing, the awesome center who help take those John Thompson Jr. teams to the aforementioned NCAA championship games.
Obviously, I’m getting old. I think it was three years ago that my son and I went to a Temple-Pitt football game. Among the Temple players was Dan Klecko (now a Super Bowl champion with the Colts). Dan’s father, Joe, played for the Owls my first semester at Temple (fall 1974).
All of the “old” jokes aside, it is kind of fun to see the sons of fathers and to be able to tell my son, “I remember when …”
And please don’t abuse me because I only figured out yesterday that Thompson and Ewing were “back” with the Hoyas, who won on Saturday, 61-53.
